A clothing label is often the final detail added to a product, but it plays an important role. Labels show which brand the product belongs to and can also provide information about size, material, or care instructions. That’s why it’s essential to sew labels correctly and place them in the right spot.
In this blog, we explain how to sew labels and where they are usually positioned in a garment.
Most labels are sewn into a seam during the garment construction. This ensures the label stays firmly in place and prevents the edges from fraying.
Common ways to sew labels include:
1. Into a seam
The label is stitched into the side seam of the garment, leaving only a small part visible. For this placement, the “center fold” type label is recommended.

2. In the neckline
This is a popular spot for brand labels. The label is placed at the back of the neck, on the inside of the garment. The best fold type for this label is the “end fold.”
3. On the outside of the product
If you want to sew a label on the edge of a product, we recommend end fold labels, which ensure the top and bottom are neatly finished and the fold is made manually.
For example, if you sew a label onto a t-shirt, such as on the chest, you can choose either an “only cut” label (sealed around, no raw edges) or an end fold label.

Which method works best depends on the type of label and the type of product.
The placement of a label depends on the information it contains.
Placing labels in these positions keeps garments professional and organized.
Not every brand sews their own labels. Many collaborate with studios that handle production and finishing. In the Netherlands, there are several studios that can help, including:
These studios assist with patterns, sample making, and garment production, from small runs to full collections. Working with a studio ensures your labels are sewn neatly and professionally into your products.
